- Baikonur is the town, the administrative centre near the spaceport. The complex is rented by Russian Federation and is considered as strategic point of republic significance of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. The history of the town is directly related with the development of space industry of former USSR and now Russia.
After thorough toponymic and geographical researches, the construction of special poligon spaceport in desert area in Kyzyl Orda region of Kazakhstan began in 1955.
In 1961 the first experiments of launching the astronaut Yury Gagarin to the open space, a round trip around the Earth and successful return to the planned area took place from the spaceport Baikonur.
That event started the new historical era of the space discovery and astronautical researches in the space race between USSR and western countries.
No wonder that the city monuments are mostly devoted to the major personalities of the space industry - honored astronauts and leading space engineers.

- Monument to Gagarin is the memorial to the first astronaut Yury Gagarin- 4 meter high monument of Yury Gagarin raising both hands to sky.
It is creating an interesting optic illusion that the astronaut is holding the sun between the hands in daytime and moon in nighttime. There is a tradition of all Russian astronauts to visit the monument as a tribute before the spaceflights.
- The Museum of Baikonur cosmodrome history is a unique museum, established in 1968,the museum fund contains more than 15 thousand exhibits and the expositions of the museum are constantly enlarging adding new halls. The museum reflects the glorious past, present and future tire of the astronautics.
It is a remarkable that the Museum has the collection of the models not only soviet or Russian space achievement but also models exhibits from all the world spaceports too as they presented the artifacts to the first world cosmodrome and the museum itself.

- Complex named "Buran" ("Buran" - "strong storm")."Buran" was the first autopiloting space shuttle launched in the Earth orbit in 1988 and made the exact piloting controlled landing at the new aidrome Yunileyny after 206 minute and 2 full circles round the Earth. The methods and techniques used during the autopiloting and piloting based on the experience of "Buran" crew navigation are used even now for the modern shuttles.
